Before you buy this stroller for it's looks...

As a design professional, I have to admit to occasionally bowing to the aesthetic qualities of a product and paying more for it as a result. Phil & Ted's products commonly possess this strong visual attractiveness, but it is normally married with strong industrial design principles that make for an innovative and user-friendly experience. With the "smart" stroller however, something went wrong.Most of the issues my wife and I have with the smart relate to the position of the swing pivot, which is too high. This causes two problems:Firstly, it is difficult to maneuver off curbs; a high pivot position makes it very difficult to swing the stroller back (the natural motion for negotiating curbs and steps.)Secondly, it is difficult to fold; most strollers utilize a lower pivot position so that when you release the locking mechanism gravity does the rest and the chair "wants" to fold. With the smart you have to tip the chair right back in order for this to happen.The unlocking mechanism is fiddly an involves releasing two bicycle-type quick release levers and then releasing a sprung loaded locator from its hole. Again, unlike most strollers, this buggy has to coerced into unfolding.Our biggest grip of all however, is that it is difficult to steer. The smart buggy has two separate handles when it could so easily have been joined across the middle. Why?! to save a few grams?!! I now know why virtually all decent strollers have a single, continuous push handle... When you have only one hand free, (common with a mobile toddler) you need to push the stroller in the middle to keep it in straight line! exactly where there is a gap with this stroller! because it is missing the stroller also twists and flexes horribly. On anything other than a smooth mall floor, this stroller is a pain.The lycra canopy is a cool idea, but can't be locked in the up position so it becomes a Childs play thing rather than a protection thin.The optional cup holder has to be removed every time you fold the chair.The parking brake often clicks whilst pushing because it won't remain in the fully unlocked position. Reclining the chair is not easy and it doesn't recline very much.So to summarize: there are many things wrong with this stroller and not much right. If you buy one, you will manage, it is not dangerous or anything, but if you have ever owned or used a different stroller you will realize how flawed the Phil & Ted's smart buggy is. It is all style and not enough substance and I urge you to look at other alternatives.

I've been waiting for this stroller since Jan 2010 and finally its out in the market now (June 2010)! So as the first 'brave' one to review this, here's what i can say...1) assembly is no brainer! I dont even need to read the manual. But you still have to as you might miss some steps.2) If 'lightweight' means an umbrella stroller for you, then this Smart buggy is not for you. This is still kindda heavy specially once you have attached the wheels. So lifiting it to/from your car's trunk still needs your 2 strong muscular arms. But if you have the usual 'travel system' of other strollers or those bugaboo - ha! you should be strong enough for this new one.3) folding/unfolding is very easy (the front wheels are just wiggly when folding). Note that you CANNOT store it standing, unless it is leaning on something steady. It should be laid flat like in your car.4) yes its very easy to maneuver. Note that the front wheels dont lock.5) reclining the seat is NOT easy! (but the video shows that you can easily slide the 'clip/fastener') I got my finger pinched 4 times already! ouch! So be careful. Watch that little finger...if you know what i mean...6) Yes it is compact, but dont expect for a spacious basket underneath. You may need to purchase an extra bag that you can hang on it for your extra stuffs and coffee.7) some website says the handle is extendable. However, its not said in the manual. I even tried it myself but cant. I hope i'll discover it soon, if its true :(8) the canopy is made of lycra??? Great idea!9) the unique core seat is the best! waterproof and wipe clean.My major disappointment is I just hope that the car seat adapter for stroller is easily available. Just like the stroller, this will be another waiting game. They said it'll be available this summer. Let's see...sighhhh...You may check out their video in you tube. after long search, I decided to buy this item mainly due to the good review from someone here. However, I couldn't find the maximum weight capacity in the amazon.com so I searched on Phil and Ted official web site. [...] It said the buggy can accommodate up to 44 pounds but when I got the product, it said in the outside box, it can accommodate 33 pounds only. The recline part is very very uncomfortable which I don't understand whey they had to make it that way. The seat is little narrow on the baby's leg side making it uncomfortable to seat for a long time. Also, the soft plastic seat will feel very cold in the winter without some additional cusion, also smells bad.I'm returning this product.
